What we eat has an impact on the environment. In the quest for sustainability, the startup Alver Golden Chlorella from the canton of Vaud continues the development of foods containing plant-based protein. The aim is to reduce the carbon footprint and to produce an absolute minimum of greenhouse gas emissions.

Following the launch of Golden Chlorella Protein Powder in 2016, the company is now enlarging its range with a new, 100% natural and vegetal superfood: a protein powder based on yellow mung beans, Golden Bean. This powder is neutral in taste and smell and contains a record of 86% protein! It mixes easily with all the everyday meals. Golden Bean is one of the most promising alternatives for a balanced diet considering the future of our planet.

Mung Bean … what a strange name!

Probably more familiar in the form of germs and as an ingredient in salads, soups or Asian stir-fries, the mung bean is a small oval bean found in a long, mostly green pod of the legume family. It is available in different forms: fresh, germinated or dry. Archaeological evidence indicates that mung was already cultivated in 1500 BC in India before it spread throughout Asia. It has become very popular over the last decade as it has high protein and fibre content and it reduces the feeling of hunger between meals. Nutritionists and Ayurvedic experts have been interested in this relative of the lentil for years and praise its benefits. Only recently, the mung bean became popular with restaurants and bloggers who are concerned with a balanced diet as well.

Golden Bean, the most wholesome source of vegetable protein

Numerous scientific studies showed that mung is one of the most protein-rich plant foods. The powder that is obtained after the extraction process, contains 86% protein! Mine Uran, CEO at Alver, points out that “Golden Bean, besides its exceptional nutritional value that is due to its high amino acid content, is notable for its lack of aftertaste, such as is observed with soy protein. The content of iron, zinc and calcium is also high. The amino acids in Golden Bean are much higher than in milk proteins. This puts an end to the belief that plant proteins are not as rich as animal proteins. ”

Golden Bean can be used as a neutral and odourless ingredient in all everyday recipes. It blends very well and without lumps, for example in a soup, a Bircher muesli, a salad dressing, a cake, etc. An easy-to-use health food, both athletes and people who are looking for a balanced diet with little or no animal protein will appreciate.

A protein that is good for the figure

Mung bean proteins reduce the feeling of hunger by increasing serotonin levels. Serotonin is commonly known as “happiness hormone” and regulates satiety. Daily consumption of this type of protein naturally reduces calorie intake. According to Mine Uran, mung bean proteins contain about 20% amino acids, including a high amount of isoleucine, leucine, valine and tryptophan. The high content of tryptophan, one of the amino acids that are essential for the body, is proven to facilitate the production of serotonin, which in turn regulates appetite.

A healthy and balanced diet is not complete without a minimal protein intake! According to the Swiss Society of Nutrition, an adult should consume at least 0.8 grams of protein a day per kilogram of body weight, that would be about 48 grams for a 60-kg person. The protein powder from mung beans contains 86% vegetable protein and is also rich in minerals like iron, zinc and calcium.

Golden Bean is a registered trademark. Price: CHF 24.95 / pack of 200 grams
