Every spring, Zurich welcomes one of the most important international wine exhibitions: expovinaPRIMAVERA.

The popular spring wine fair celebrates its 15th anniversary already and this year’s edition takes again place in the trend location Giessereihalle PULS 5 in the centre of Zurich-West. For eight days this venue is transforming into a real marketplace for wine lovers. More than 80 wine producers and wine merchants offer around 2,000 wines from all major wine growing regions in the world for tasting and enjoyment. In addition to top-class specialities and rarities, tried and tested everyday wines are presented as well.

Dominant are, however, domestic varieties. Valais, the largest Swiss winegrowing canton, is the most represented with about 200 wines, followed by wines from the cantons of Zurich and Graubünden. Also striking is the presence of the winemakers from Vaud, Aargau and Schaffhausen.

Traditionally, the first wines of the new vintage are presented at expovinaPRIMAVERA. The summer of 2018 was characterised by extremely hot temperatures, resulting in extraordinarily ripe grapes. In wine terms, the year 2018 is considered a vintage of the century. Numerous Swiss winegrowers offer visitors the opportunity to taste their vintages 2018 for the first time. Will the tasting confirm the record-breaking forecasts? You can find out directly at the fair! It is open until 4th April.

The offer at expovinaPRIMAVERA also reflects the Swiss wine market for foreign wines. The “Parade” is led by Italy. At over 15 stalls, you can taste wines from almost all regions of the Apennine Peninsula. You will find wines from the premium segment as well as everyday wines. Spain is also very well represented. In addition to the classics, you can taste remarkable wines from lesser-known regions of the south. France confirms the renaissance that has been noticeable for several years with a comprehensive range. And once again, Austria presents itself as the undisputed leader of “small” Europeans, followed by Portugal and Germany.

Exciting is the journey to the east of Europe. Besides Hungary, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Romania and Greece, Armenia will be there for the first time. The land of Mount Ararat looks back on more than eight thousand years of wine tradition! More than ten exhibitors present wines from overseas. South Africa dominates, followed by the USA and Argentina. expovinaPRIMAVERA offers also the opportunity to discover wines from Peru and Uruguay.

The event venue is great as well. The building, a former, well-preserved foundry hall, is over 100 years old. With the modern design of the fair, this creates a fascinating atmosphere. In the evening, the lighting is spectacular. Here, in this unique environment, the visitor can fully immerse in the world of wine. The Giessereihalle is only a few minutes’ walk away from Escher-Wyss-Platz. You can reach it in just 10 minutes by public transport from Zurich main station: Tram 4 to Technopark, tram 17 to Förrlibuckstrasse or S-Bahn to Zürich Hardbrücke. There is also ample parking in the vicinity.

expovinaPRIMAVERA is open until April 4, 2019. Weekdays from 4 pm to 10 pm, Saturday from 2 pm to 10 pm and Sunday from noon to 6 pm. The entry fee is CHF 25.- and includes a catalogue. All the info on www.expovina.ch.

Visiting expovinaPRIMAVERA is always worthwhile. The atmosphere is fantastic! We were there with Obrist last year and invited Christina from NewInZurich and Marina from Lovefoodish for a tasting. Below are some impressions and highlights.

Obrist expovinaPrimavera Lovefoodish

Obrist Brut – Swiss sparkling wine

The first highlight that impressed us at the Obrist booth is Obrist Brut. Pale yellow with silvery accents and a lively, persistent perlage, this sparkling wine captivates with an elegant, complex personality. Citrus scents and aromas of mandarin and rose petals characterize the charming Obrist Brut. On the palate, it is pleasantly fresh; a sparkling wine that is perfect for all festive aperitifs and that pairs well with smoked fish, crab meat, fresh asparagus, shellfish and scallops, lobster soup, grilled sea bass, duck with olive sauce, Beaufort, Camembert, flambéed pineapple and Apricot Charlotte. “Noir d’Obrist” 2012 – Vin doux naturel, Vaud AOC

The second highlight that absolutely inspired us is this liqueur wine: Noir d’Obrist. Of wonderful red color with hints of brick red it features intense aromas of plum, black cherry, tonka bean and vanilla. A harmonious wine of perfect balance, fruity and with wonderfully round tannins, it is characterized by a beautiful length. Noir d’Obrist pairs perfectly with blue cheese, roasted meat with spicy-hot sauce and chocolate desserts. For more information and orders follow this link >>>

Obrist YOLO – uncomplicated Swiss wines

Hazel especially enjoyed this range of Obrist wines: trendy, uncomplicated, unconventional – YOLO stands for “You Only Live Once”! And that is exactly what makes the charm of these wines. YOLO is the wine for all occasions; a good choice to enjoy with friends, to share the good things in life, such as an aperitif or a good meal. Information and orders here >>>
