Every penny counts: Switzerland donates over 6 million Swiss Francs for Mothers in Need
Everywhere in the world women and mothers are victim to violence, abuse, human trafficking and health risks. That is why the extraordinary Swiss fund raising campaign „Jeder Rappen zählt“ (every penny counts) has collected the incredible sum of 6’295’846 Swiss Franks this year! A cool idea that deserves all of our attention! We say WELL DONE and are already thinking about how we can contribute next year… You have an idea? Share it with us by sending it to buzz@coolbrands!
Mothers in need, in Switzerland and everywhere else, require our support. «Jeder Rappen zählt», that is the motto reuniting Swiss Radio and Television (DRS 3, SF), Swiss Solidarity, a foundation that raises funds for humanitarian relief projects, Coop, Ricardo and Swisscom with the aim to sustainably improve living conditions of mothers and their children. A very ambitious goal that requires the support of many people! Thanks to the participation of numerous Swiss people, celebrities like Fabian Unteregger, Seven and Alain Berset included, this year’s campaign collected 6’295’846 million Swiss Francs
For example, Ruedi Frehner, a marathon runner from Chur, has collected 44’000 Francs by running the distance from Chur to Lucerne, corresponding at approximately five times the distance of a marathon. 20 inhabitants from Lucerne have collected 5 Rappen pieces all throughout the year and then brought the lot in a wheelbarrow to Europaplatz where they handed the money over. Others have raised 6’000 Francs by swimming in the ice-cold Lake of Lucerne.
The raised funds will be used exactly where they are most needed. That is guaranteed by Swiss Solidarity. The foundation works with over 30 Swiss relief organisations that are committed to helping mothers in need by providing shelter and food. But the project also aims to facilitate help on the long-term: medical aid, information and education for women in conflict areas as well as in Switzerland.
Long before the fund raising campaign several presenters from radio DRS have visited different conflict areas like Bangladesh, Congo, Mali, Columbia and Sri Lanka, but also the Outpatient Clinic for the Victims of Torture and War of the Swiss Red Cross in order to find out how the funds can be used best.
From 12th to 17th December this year DRS 3 presenters Anic Lautenschlager, Kathrin Hönegger and Nik Hartmann have moved into the glass box in front of KKL Lucerne for the good cause and have followed and commented the fund raising activities from there.
