Authentic, timeless and original, this is Mondaine, the popular Swiss watch brand. Functionality is in focus; style and elegance are always a trend for this label. Mondaine is a Swiss icon, their design unmistakable: the contrast of black and white with red accents, no frills and reduced to a minimum. What makes a watch a watch? Exactly, it displays the time. And that is something that Mondaine is doing so precisely for a long time that they have been selected official timepiece by the SBB. The iconic clock face is dated 1944, but, as is often the case with expert design, it is durable, timeless and virtually everlasting. Often copied, but unmet: Mondaine stands for honesty, reliability and punctuality. All attributes associated with the quality seal Made in Switzerland.

Mondaine Helvetica: Symbol of Swiss Values

As an icon of Swiss Made, Mondaine focuses on the essentials, namely the precision of its timepieces. The brand’s timing is always spot-on: bridging tradition and innovation, the design is timeless and the watches themselves are long lasting. Without aiming at a specific age group, Mondaine is a brand that connects people of different generations.

Literally anyone who has ever been at Zurich’s main train station will remember the large clock at the SBB Meeting Point. This particular Swiss landmark is also well known from the media. Newspapers, magazines and websites in the tourism branch oftentimes use an image of it to illustrate their articles. And who has never said: “Where should we meet?” “Hum, at the big clock is best!”.

In 1944, Hans Hilfiker designed the official Swiss train station clock. In 1957, Max Miedinger and Eduard Hoffman designed the font “Helvetica”. Everyone knows it, since it is widely popular for logos and graphic elements! The first Mondaine watch was introduced in 1986 and since the launch of the Helvetica collection in 2014, the symbol for Swiss values is adorning numerous wrists here and everywhere else in the world.

Mondaine essence: Sustainability in focus

On October 25, 2017, Mondaine launched another innovation with their “essence” collection. Puristic and kept in the Bauhaus style, this watch collection, while following the footsteps of its predecessors, differs in terms of the materials used. About 70% of the components of the watchcase are renewable. The most astonishing part: the work is done using castor oil, a material usually known from holistic medicine. In the production of the watch, oil is extracted from the seeds of this plant and is then used in the production of the case.

The wristband of the “essence” watches consists of natural rubber; the packaging is made of 100% renewable materials, namely recycled PET bottles. As a pioneer of their industry, Mondaine is proving with this innovation that environmental consciousness and sustainability can also be realized in the manufacturing of watches. Four models are available: two sizes (32 mm and 41 mm) and two colors for the clock face can be selected (white and black). From November, the “essence” watches will be available on the Swiss market for a price of CHF 170.00 (MSRP). You can find out where to buy them here >>>

Below I’ve listed five of the things that I have personally already implemented, or think are important. Of course, the story continues because our efforts for sustainability never end. On the contrary, engagement in this context is becoming more and more urgent!

Taking public transport

About five years ago, when I became an entrepreneur and began working from home, I also decided to let go of my wonderful cabriolet. It was mostly standing in the garage and now that I wasn’t driving to work anymore, but could do my job comfortably on my laptop from home or from one of the many cafes in the city, the time had come to seriously think about my car’s usefulness.

In Switzerland we are so wonderfully connected with public transport that you can go almost anywhere with train, bus, subway and tram. Walking a few blocks… has never harmed anyone either! In a city like Lausanne, you are generally often faster if you walk somewhere than if you take the car. And also, the endless search for parking spaces, oh no! But it wasn’t only for reasons of ‘convenience’ that I let go of my car! No, my decision was also motived by the belief that there is no need for another polluter in my hometown.

I got a halftax subscription and easily get from A to B that way. But most of all stress-free! Taking the train is just so much more relaxing than to wind your way through crowded streets in the car, stand at the light, drive stop and go or to be stuck in a traffic jam altogether. I call taking the train quality time because I can work while being mobile, move around, drink a coffee and also often meet nice people.

Recycling, upcycling: giving used items a new life

This aspect has always existed in my life. At home I learned from a young age that many things could be reused in many, different and original ways beyond their first and obvious purpose. For example, a jam jar can be wonderfully converted into a mobile snack box. Containers made of glass are well suited for transporting food, portioning quantities and serving small dishes beautifully. But not only food can be stored in jars, they are also useful for the small things that like to lay around everywhere in the home, such as buttons, sewing supplies, paper clips, memory sticks… And those that have kids know: Crafting makes happy! Why not gather the family around a table to get creative together?

Plastic is not so fantastic! Get rid of it!

Plastic is probably one of the biggest culprits on our planet. There are so many initiatives that aim at replacing plastic with other materials. I personally try to avoid it altogether wherever I can. One example is, as described above, replacing plastic containers through other, degradable materials. Another is, making certain decisions when shopping: does it have to be the plastic container with the individual orange slices or could you buy a whole one and peel it yourself? No matter how short your lunch break, you should have time for that, right?

And: in Switzerland we are lucky; we have some of the best tap water in the world. Highly regulated and controlled, it is available to us anytime, anywhere and in virtually unlimited quantities. Remind yourself of this fact, every time you want to reach for bottled mineral water. For those who prefer their water sparkling, you could purchase a soda maker. There are also many alternative options for giving your water flavor; it doesn’t have to be the unbelievably sweet soda you find on the supermarket shelf.

Coolness begins in the kindergarten. So does awareness!

What I am trying to say is that sustainable behavior can be learned. We as adults, and the society as a whole for that matter, have a responsibility towards our young to protect the planet so that future generations can live on it as well.

Without politicizing the question of environmental pollution and climate change, everyone will be aware that children imitate the behavior of their elders and people of respect. If we don’t act as role models and treat other people, animals and nature with respect, children cannot learn from us.

Chewing gum >> should not be spit on the street, packaging >> shouldn’t just be ‘thrown away’ somewhere outside. Food >> shouldn’t be purchased in excess quantities just to be thrown away afterwards…

Many, many small and larger gestures and habits that are part of our daily lives can be evaluated and handled (more) consciously. It is also important for children to develop awareness for the fact that they are not the center of the universe, but part of a whole. Empathy, solidarity and understanding for others are also values that are worthwhile teaching to children, preferably by living them yourself.

Stop & go: Take time for life

In this sense, I also think it is important to remember that sustainable behavior requires and deserves not only awareness but also time. Reduce your speed every once in a while. Put a stop to the daily rat race and return to the simply things such as cooking, painting or taking a walk.

If we are honest with ourselves, it is these things that we often miss out on. However, the biggest impact can probably be achieved in this context: taking time to think, research, share with others, make conscious decisions… and to enjoy life in harmony with nature and other beings. Isn’t that the true purpose of life? Let me know what you think!

Why not post the links to your contributions directly in the comment box below this article and let’s work on a list together: what have we implemented already and what can we still do (better). I am looking forward to reading your posts!
