Freitag Reference: collection Autum-Winter 2012
It still happens that people touch a REFERENCE bag and ask: «What kind of leather is this?» For the Freitag Bros. this is flattering, no less. It shows how far they’ve come with their workmanship. The truth is: REFERENCE bags like all FREITAG products are made from roadkill – used truck tarps salvaged from trucking companies all over the world, assorted, washed, cut, sewn, lined, and punched into shape. The fifth REFERENCE collection continues down the same road – or should we say highway? – as it’s precursors, based on blue, grey and as a first: silver colorways, making reference to messengers of the word in their names and features, and boasting the kind of individual irregularities that drive FREITAG aficionados wild. But it wouldn’t be FREITAG if there weren’t some neat new ideas to be found along the way. Stick with us while we share with you some of the highlights.

Do not mistake an E for an O. While the usual weekend away from home may involve a hotel, the new oversized weekender HILTEN makes reference to a tycoon of words, not of beds. Think of a bag that’s big enough to pack without second thoughts but not with the thoughtlessness of a duffle. R516 HILTEN has enough compartments to confuse any border patrol, a fold-out function for truly sinful shopping and nifty side-straps to the left and right of the bag to prevent overhead-bin-traumata. And: Remember how you used to carry your gym bag on your back, arms twisted through the hand loops? HILTEN has them padded and placed perfectly for this too-coolfor- school carrying mode (beats a trolley for sure).

As Heinrich Christian Hermitz was the first in Germany to publish daily, R517 HERMITZ is probably the first serious shoulder bag smaller than A4/US letter. Seriously. Your paperwork simply will-not-fit. Paper-less iPad owners will see it as a point of differentiation. Leave behind the boredom of objectivism. Life is about taking sides. And HERMITZ shows which one you’re on.

A handbag with a shoulder strap. So what? But then, RÉMY is never half full, only half empty. And what happens, when you throw a half empty R110 RÉMY over your shoulder? It folds. In the most elegant way imaginable. Something a woman who made her way in journalism would never have done, of course. The purpose: To serve and protect what’s inside from the loud open mouth of the bag. And with Swiss Riri zippers and coated lining on everything

There is nothing rough about this beautiful A-shaped shoulder bag full of great tricks. Named in reference to Josephine Ruffin, publisher of the first African American newspaper, this bag has a dream. Taking architectural intelligence to a category of bags usually just designed around aesthetics, the A-shape gives the bag stability and «form». Something we might also call «attitude».
