A young internet video company that is So Money!
I met Avik and Jon at my first ever Brits in Business event in April this year where they presented their company to an amazed public: two finance guys that quit their highflying jobs to do what again?
Yeah, that’s right! Left their banking careers to “do video”. It’s a story quite to my taste actually. I find people interesting that dare! It really is not an easy step to take, I mean, leaving the comforting cocoon of your perceived security, particularly if it is in the pursuit of your passions.
And that is exactly what reunites the two: the passion for video-making. Having both worked in Finance for numerous years – in London, New York and Geneva – Jonathan Edwards of Swiss and British origin and Avik Ray, who is British of Indian origin, met, miraculously, through the 48 hour film competition in Geneva.
That story alone would make for a fun fuelled evening, I am sure. But there is more to our encounter: as you know, I have started coolbrands some six months ago and that was the time that Avik and Jon took their new business full time also. And quite like my own, their motif was to pursue their dream of running their own company.
Avik’s and Jon’s focus being on video, they founded So Money, a Geneva based digital media company specialising in the production of video for organizations on the internet. Their vision is ambitious: “reinventing the way that organizations use video in Switzerland and then the rest of Europe by leveraging the immense possibilities that the internet has to offer”. They have already started executing on their vision and are having a lot of fun doing it!
These guys quit their steady Finance jobs for it, so be sure that they mean business!
True, it is said that there is never a good time to leave your job or have kids – well, Avik for one did both at the same time! His baby son Sebastian, was born on 1.11.11 which coincided with his first official day of working full time on So Money.
And then, on 11.11.11 – being not only the day on which coolbrands.ch was founded but also the second annual global day of media creation called One Day on Earth – So Money produced a video specifically for that occasion to share the thoughts of Avik as a new father and his hopes and dreams for his newborn son.
The funny thing: not only was So Money founded on a similarly significant date as coolbrands, but with Avik’s son, there is another Sebastian entering our (little) universe! Three Sebastians alone were part of my team at the Start-up weekend. And I’m telling you, really, Sebastians are cool And for this little Sebastian here, we wish all the best in the entire world! May the sun shine upon him and his every dream become reality!
The guys have been pushing full throttle since they started and here is a short summary of some of the cool stuff So Money have been doing the last few months:
- Designed and produced a series of 16 videos for the first ever British-Swiss Business Awards
- Filmed Arnold Schwarzenegger for the AIC
- Produced a music video in Colombia for the UK electro group Craylo
- Worked on some videos when Hugh Quennec made his bid to save Servette FC
- Filmed an All Star Hockey game with stars from the NHL
- Filmed successful Swiss entrepreneurs for Le Réseau, namely Ecowizz, Sartorys and ValleyRoad Capital
- Gave an interview on World Radio Switzerland
- Met tons of amazing people (Yeah!)
Not to mention getting significant traction with their target client base and executing on their vision of reinventing the way organisations use video on the internet and a whole lot more!
So, if you want to integrate video in your strategy, these are the guys you should definitely talk to. I already have!
