Viva Mexico – Viva Playa del Carmen

Posted on 10/08/2018 by Desiree Reichmuth

Playa del Carmen is located in the state of Quintana Roo in southern Mexico and currently has more than 200,000 inhabitants. Only 35 years ago, it was still a small fishing village with only 200 local fishermen. Today it is one of the most popular places in all of Mexico.

I lived in Mexico for four months, three of them in Playa del Carmen. I call it the paradise on earth. It is such a beautiful place and the people so friendly and kind hearted. The Mexicans here in the south know how to enjoy life every single day.

The Caribbean Sea with its turquoise water and white sandy beach invites you to enjoy and relax. Cold drinks, tacos and a view to die for, can you think of something better? Those of you who like it upbeat shouldn’t miss Mamitas Beach under any circumstances – it is known as “the” party place, be it during the day or at night.

For all boys and girls who like shopping, you will not be disappointed here. From Aldo via Hollister to Sephora, you can really get everything your heart desires in the pedestrian area of La Quinta. If you get hungry, you will be spoiled for choice between hundreds of delicious restaurants. For all night owls, La Quinta also offers a party area where Coco Bongo, for example, convinces with A1 shows, what’s more: all drinks are included!

Close to Playa del Carmen are Cancun, Puerto Morello and Tulum. I can highly recommend all three places for day trips. For those who prefer t explore the island life Cozumel, Isla Mujeres and Holbox are not far away.

Quintana Roo is known for its spectacular natural parks. The park “Xcaret” is for explorers who want to know more about animals like turtles or dolphins and those who wish to spend an enchanted evening watching a show about the history of Mexico. “Xel-Ha” is a great park for snorkeling and relaxing – absolutely unbelievable: food and drinks are included in the entry price! If you like action, you should not miss “Xplore”. From ATV’s to paddling a canoe through Cenotes and driving a cable car like Tarzan through the jungle, there is really something to do for everyone here.

Did I feel safe in Playa del Carmen? Yes, sure! I never felt uncomfortable or unsafe here. Unfortunately, the media portray the place to us predominantly by stories of drug wars and high crime, but having lived here, I can confirm that the people are helpful, very friendly and always have a smile on their face.
